Ever stared at your envelope, wondering: How many stamps do I need to mail this? Maybe you've slapped on an extra stamp because you're not sure how much weight a postage stamp covers. (You’re not alone!) The good news? There's actually a lot you can mail with just one USPS Forever Stamp. So, here's how to answer the question:
How Many Stamps Do I Need to Mail a Letter?
Whether you're sending a birthday card, a love letter, or some important documents, knowing the USPS rules can save you stress (and stamps). So, I'm going to break it down for you with a few simple rules:
⚖️ Rule #1: Stay Under the USPS 1 Ounce Weight Limit
Forever Stamps cover up to 1 ounce. Who know's exactly how much that is?!
I had to keep looking it up, so I finally made a quick cheat sheet:
-
💌 4 sheets of standard 8.5" x 11" copy paper = ~1 ounce
-
🃏 One full suit from a deck of playing cards (like all the hearts) = just under 1 ounce
-
📬 Most single greeting cards = safely under 1 ounce.
All the cards I offer only need 1 stamp, because they're all less than 1 ounce. As an example, all the cards in my Friendship Collection are folded A2 size (4.25" x 5.5") and weigh 0.4 ounces. Each card in my Thank You Card Sets is slightly smaller and weighs only 0.3 ounces, so definitely only needs one stamp!
If you're not sure? A cheap kitchen scale is really useful here.
Here's an example of what the folded A2 cards look like (top right of the photo), next to the smaller Thank You cards (bottom left of the photo):
This is my CARGO Box Set – The Cards and Related Gifting Objects set! It's everything you need to be ready for birthdays, special occasions, and last-minute card needs. There are even a few little gifty things in there, too!
💌 Rule #2: Your Envelope Must Be Rectangular
USPS machinable mail = rectangular only.
Square envelopes? They're cute, but they're not rectangles... USPS doesn’t consider a square a rectangle (even if geometry says otherwise). Sending a square envelope means you’ll need extra postage. (There's even a special butterfly stamp for this!)
🟢 Every Queen Fayzel card (from Mother's Day & Father's Day cards to Encouragement & Support and everything else) is rectangular, so no square envelopes here!
💡 Pro tip: Stick to standard, rectangular envelopes to stay in the one-stamp zone.
📐 Rule #3: Follow the Standard Letter Size Guidelines
To qualify for one Forever Stamp, your envelope must fit within these dimensions:
-
Minimum: 5” long x 3.5” high
-
Maximum: 11.5” long x 6.125” high
Something like a wedding invitation is usually about 5" x 7" and "typical" greeting cards are usually A2 size, or 4.25" x 5.5"
For reference, the cards in my Thank You Card Sets are at the minimum size (small enough that you don't have to write a ton, and easy to just pop in the mail!).
Anything smaller or larger than those min/max dimension is what the USPS calls "non-machinable." And that means extra postage!
Here's what the Thank You cards look like, with a pen for scale. These are perfect for more "professional" thank you notes – you know, if you need to thank your boss or a colleague, or someone you don't know all that well.
📦 Rule #4: Keep It Slim — No Lumps or Bumps
The max thickness allowed is ¼ inch. So skip the bulky add-ins or chunky cards with raised embellishments.
All of my textured cards – like the Birthday Cupcake, Let's Get Lit, Heart Buddy, Ombre Trees, You Are Stellar, and Sunshine – are still slim enough that they fit well within the max thickness and only need 1 stamp!
Rigid or oddly shaped envelopes often need to be hand-canceled, which bumps you up into a higher price tier.
🙋🏻 If you're like me and like to include a lil something with cards you mail, no problem! Single stickers, single photos, recipe cards, old-school newspaper or magazine clippings... are ALL fine. They won't push you over the weight limit or make your envelope too thick.

📭 Rule #5: Your Mail Has to Be Flexible
USPS mail goes through automated sorting machines. If your envelope is stiff, thick, or can’t bend? It’s officially non-machinable and will cost extra.
Things that make mail rigid:
-
Cardboard inserts
-
Photo prints taped to cardstock
-
Overstuffed envelopes with stickers, bookmarks, etc.
Like I said, I love including little goodies in a card (a photo, a sticker, a cute postcard, a leaf or some flower petals...), you just couldn't jam the envelope full of ALL these Queen Fayzel stickers, y' know?!
✨ Rule #6: Fancy Envelopes = Possible Extra Postage
Planning to mail something extra beautiful?
-
Wax seals
-
Ribbon or twine
-
Decorative clasps or layers
All of these can make your envelope non-machinable. That doesn’t mean you can’t use them—but you’ll likely need to:
-
✅ Take it to the post office and ask for hand-canceling, OR
-
✅ Place it inside a plain envelope for mailing
So, How Many Stamps Do You Need to Mail a Letter?
Here’s a list of examples of how much weight a single postage stamp covers:
-
✅ Standard letters (under 1 oz)
-
✅ Greeting cards (under 1 oz, no rigid bits)
-
✅ Postcards (though they actually require less than a Forever Stamp!)
-
✅ Checks, invoices, or other light documents
-
✅ Pen pal mail, as long as it’s bendable and slim
Bottom Line: When In Doubt, Check the Weight
One forever stamps is pretty forgiving—but not limitless. Stick to standard size, flexible shape, and under 1 oz, and you’re golden.
Everything else? It’s not a big deal—you’ll just need a few extra cents of postage.
